Creatures of the Oloŋxo

The Oloŋxo is the name given to the saga of Saxa tales. It is one of the oldest epics of the Turkic peoples.

Below are the various creatures that appear within it:

  • Beki Sorun: a demon known to have a glutinous throat the size of a fur cap string.

  • Suor Toyon: a demon lord known to have a throught as wide as the string of a waistcloth. 

  • Alyp Khara Aat Mogoidon: a demon-dragon from the Underworld and the spirit of the abyss. 

  • Jahyl: a huge magical bird.

  • Ekseku: a huge magical eagle known to have two or three heads to assist in shaministic rituals. 

  • Khoro: a sacred bird that protects shamans. 

  • Sotuun: an invisible Abaahy that kills reindeer and horses.

  • Ohol: also known as Neru Kharbas, the spirit of misfortune and discord. 

  • Ilbis: also known as Til-Tilinnekh, Ytyk-Kyimylyn, and Kuo-Kholbonnoi, the spirit of war.

  • Cheekei: a spirit that sends eye diseases.

  • Abaahy, or Adjarai, are evil, hideous cyclopses made of iron and with one arm and leg. Their faces are on the back of their heads. Their only arm, that grows from their chest, is forked at the elbow and knee of their only leg. They are a manifistation of all sin and known to transform into dragons.
