A type of monster in Turkic mythology. The original vampire.
An Opır or Yuvxa (Turkmen: Ювдарха Yuvdarxa, Ювха Yuvxa “monster, dragon; greedy;” Chuvash: вупăр Vupı̆r, вăпăр Vı̆pı̆r “evil spirit, unclean spirit, monster, ghoul, vampire;” Tatar: убыр Uvır a mythological monster) is a type of monster in Turkic mythology. It is the inspiration, as well as the etymological origin for the modern vampire. From either Turkic *oːp “to suck, swallow” and/or Turkic *jubut “to swallow.”
