Persian Art Historian Layla S. Diba, who unfortunately authored the book "Turkmen Jewelry," has a fundamental misunderstanding of Turkic jewelry. This particular piece is obviously not Türkmen (Turkmen) as she claimed, but Uyğur (Uyghur). In fact, it is based on a Tibetan style. It is likely not from Khotan. Other Uyğur (Uyghur) pieces that share the same etching pattern are from Ürümqi. To that end, It is indeed the etchings that reveal this as an Uyğur (Uyghur) piece.
